Mumbai, August 31, 2015: JSW Group has always been at the forefront of driving various sustainability initiatives aimed at conserving the environment, and building awareness to facilitate a greener tomorrow.
In line with the commitment, JSW Group today took the next step in the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” initiative with the deployment of efficient and durable steel toilets at the KumbhMela at Nashik.Branded as “JSW
Pehal”, the steel toilets have been developed with the objective of providing sanitation for all.

Translated to mean “Clean India Mission”, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a campaign initiated by the government of India in working towards the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s national vision of a “Clean India” by 2019. As a responsible corporate with the objective of developing sustainable communities, JSW Steel has embarked on this journey in support of the national campaign. This installation of steel toilets is
a similar step by JSW Group to address the huge problem of defecation in open and will help “Swachh Bharat Mission”.

As a part of its corporate social responsibility, JSW has installed 300 such steel toilet units in Maha Kumbh-2015 at Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. The Kumbh Mela is the most eventful and significant spiritual get-together in India. Lakhs of devotees around the country gather at the MahaKumbh to take a holy dip in the water of River Godavari. This is a big support to the visiting pilgrims for the Maha Kumbh.
The noble initiative has been strongly supported and much appreciated by the Nasik Administration and the specially formed Simhastha Kumbh Mela Authorities.

JSW’s Steel Toilets have multiple advantages over the conventional toilets made of brick and mortar because of its lesser time for fabrication and installation, lesser maintenance, better aesthetics, resistance to fire and mobility. In addition, due to the insulated sandwich panel walls, it optimises the temperature inside the toilets.
These steel toilets are also cost-effective and comparable to conventional toilets.

The installed toiletswith an average life of 20 years are steel intensive structures with a modular construction. The fabrication of the structure takes place at the factory site and components are later reassembled at desired location. The toilets are fabricated using Hot Rolled steel sections as framework for strength while the pre-painted galvanized steel sandwich panels for the shell provides corrosion resistance and long life. The modular components of the toilets are portable and can be transported easily due toits light weight and small components. The toilets are provided with adequate water, drainage and eco-friendly sewage arrangements.

The Swachh Bharat programme aims to make India “open defecation free” by 2019. As per the initiative, the government plans to construct 12 crore toilets in rural India by 2019. It’s quite difficult to construct such large quantity by traditional means in the targeted time frame. Steel toilet is a solution to achieve the novel cause in the ambitious timeframe.

Steel being a recyclable material, it is much more environment friendly than concrete or plastic or any other traditional material. Hence, it is better suited for a program which is focusing on health along with hygiene.
Sajjan Jindal, Chairman & Managing Director, JSW Group, said: “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a great initiative for the nation and as a leader in our industry it’s our responsibility to showcase the best of India to
the world. The objective behind this initiative was to communicate the significance of a sanitation and clean environment to the local community. A cleaner and hygienic environment always spreads a sense of positive vigor and inspires the hope of a greener future for our next generations. We are proud to take a forward step in the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ by installing steel toilets and we plan to participate in many more such initiatives and work towards the goal of the “Clean India” by 2019. Supporting this national campaign is also in line with our focus of being a responsible business, which is part of our core
values and at the heart of everything we do.”

JSW has already been associated with Clean India program earlier through construction of 5564 individual toilets and 85 school toilets. In addition, JSW has also contributed to the cleaning of Godavari River to support Nasik Municipal Corporation.
