Missing IBM techie found murdered by auto driver friend for money

Pune, 10 August 2015 – A 40-year-old software engineer of IBM Company in Yerwada, who went missing on August 2, was murdered by his auto rickshaw friend for money. His body was found in Pirangut area on August 3 but the face was disfigured and he could not be identified.

Police have arrested the autorickshaw driver who is a criminal on record with 14 cases and his friend for the murder of Mohan Gopinath Shenoy, a native of Mumbai, who lived in Shanti Rakshak society in Yerwada.

They had withdrawn Rs 2.5 lakh from Shenoy’s account and spent on liquor, gambling and hotel stay in Pune, Shirdi and Solapur. Yerwada police have arrested Uttam Prakash Gadhve alias Utya (23) of Maniknagar, Yerwada, and Vishal Vishwas Kale (21) of Ashoknagar in Yerwada. Gadhve, the autorickshaw driver, has 14 cases including that robbery, burglaries and vehicle thefts.

Police officials said that Shenoy has been working with IBM India Pvt Ltd since 2006. He was unmarried and lived alone. He used to often travel in Gadhve’s autorickshaw. Later they started drinking together. On the night of August 2, Shenoy called Gadhve. Later Shenoy, Gadhve and Kale went to Pyasa Hotel in Mandai area near the red-light area of Budhwar Peth in the autorickshaw.

From there they went to Warje for filling CNG gas in the autorickshaw. Taking advantage of Shenoy’s inebriated state, Gadhve asked his ATM pin number. Later Gadhve dropped his friend Kale, and took Shenoy to Pirangut ghat away from Pune city. When they reached near the famous Mhasoba temple, Shenoy got down for toilet. Gadhav hit him with a stone from behind and also disfigured his face. He took out the HDFC ATM card and BlackBerry mobile phone. After that he picked up Kale.

Police said that the duo had withdrawn about Rs 2.5 lakhs from various ATMs in Pune, Shirdi and Solapur. They spent the money on gambling, liquor and staying at hotels. They have also purchased a phone worth Rs 17,000 from Bhosari.

On the morning of August 3, a passerby saw the body and informed Pune rural police following which teams from Paud police station reached the spot and took the body for post mortem at Sassoon hospital. Later a murder case was lodged against unknown persons.

In Mumbai, Shenoy’s family was unable to contact him for last three days. On August 5, Shenoy’s father Gopinath came to Pune and lodged a missing complaint with Yerwada police station. During investigation police found that since the time Shenoy went missing, Rs 2.5 lakh had been withdrawn from his account.

Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Patil of Yerwada police station, said, “Gadhve is a known criminal on our record who has 14 serious cases against him. On Sunday we detained him for questioning in a theft case and during interrogation he confessed to Shenoy’s murder for money.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Sudhir Hiremath, ACP (Khadki division) Swapna Gore guided the investigation team which included Police Inspector (crime) Vilas Sonde, assistant police inspector Madhukar Salunke, police sub inspector Arun Goud, and head constable Rajaram Ghogre, Aziz Baig, Ashok Ghegde, Namdev Supe and policemen Mahesh Mohol, Kiran Khedkar, Rakesh Chandekar, Sachin Kudale, Rahul Shinde and Sachin Manjre.
