1.682 kg gold worth Rs 42 lakhs recovered from convent educated ‘Smart’ thief

Pune August 11 – Kondhwa police say that he is involved in 51 chain snatchings.

This is the biggest detection of chain snatching by any police station under Pune police commissionerate. The seized gold has been valued at Rs 42 lakhs.

The accuses Girish Nayak(50) of Gangadham society in Bibvewadi was arrested on July 29 while riding a stolen vehicle in Lullanagar. Head constable Subhash Jadhav and constable Kailash Salunke had received information about him.

Nayak used to also steal two-wheelers by calling key maker to start them. He is convent educated and looking at his personality and communication skills, the key maker didn’t suspect anything fishy when he would say that he is the owner and has lost keys.

With the help of his friend Vijayan Shivankunar, Nayak used sell the stolen bikes to acquaintances for Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000.

Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region) Prakash Mutyal of Pune city police said, “Nayak worked in the admin department of a call centre but has been unemployed for last two years. However there has been transactions of Rs 45 lakhs in his bank accounts in the last four years.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Sudhir Hiremath said, “Nayak used to stop women under pretext of asking any address and snatch away their chains.”

According to Kondhwa police, Nayak is a commerce graduate. He worked as mechanic and later indulged in thefts. There were seven theft cases against him in 1996.

Police said that Nayak has two families and he used to pretend as working in good position in some company.

Police said that after snatching the chain, he would sell them jewellers would take cash or cheque from them.

Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Mokashi, incharge of Kondhwa police station, said,”The ornaments would be returned to their owners.”

Police said that Nayak committed chain snatchings in Bibvewadi,Swargate, Sahakarnagar, Deccan, Marketyard, Kothrud, Yerwada and Vishrantwadi, Dattawadi, Sinhgad road, Khadak and Wanowrie.”

Investigation team included ACP (Wanowrie division) Ravindra Rasal, Police Inspector Anjum Bagwan, Police sub inspector Nitin Atkare, head constables Bashir Sayyed, Santosh Tanwade, Kailash Akhute, police naik Rajas Shaikh, Ganesh Gaikwad, and constables Ramesh Rathod, Santosh Sonawane, Sachin Gaikwad, and Umakant Swami.
