Suresh Tendulkar Memorial Lecture

Mahendra Dev Director, Indira Gandhi and Research and Development Institute delivered a second Prof Suresh Tendulkar Memorial Lecture recently at Symbiosis Vishwabhavan Auditorium.

Prof Dev spoke on “Economic Reforms, Poverty and Inequality”. Prof Suresh Tendulkar Memorial Lecture is instituted by the Symbiosis School of Economics (SSE). First Prof Suresh Tendulkar Memorial Lecture was delivered by Dr Subir Gokarn, former Deputy Governor of RBI and presently the Executive Director of IMF.

Padmabhushan Dr S.B. Mujumdar, Chancellor Symbiosis International University presided over the function. Jyoti Chandiramani, Director of SSE was present on the occasion. The event was also graced by Mrs Sunetra Tendulkar’s wife of Prof Tendulkar, daughter Saee and attended by academicians, students and others.

In his lecture Dev widely spoke about the economic reform and also highlighted the important points which led to its failure.  He said, “Slow infrastructural developments, non-utilization of the demographic dividend, government failure are few points which led to the failure of economic reforms,” Dev said.

Dev also highlighted the measurement of poverty and its effect on implementation of the various schemes by government. He also touched upon positive and negative points related to measurement of poverty. He cited various reports on these issues prepared by the Prof Suresh Tendulkar.
