Chemical and petrochemical hubs to be set up in the country: Ananth Kumar

Mumbai, June 16, 2016 : Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mr. Ananth Kumar has said that Government of India will create chemical and petrochemical hubs in the country and will coordinate the state governments to provide adequate infrastructure for the industry. Speaking on the launch ceremony of INDIA – CHEM 2016 in Mumbai today, he said that, Indian chemical industry is the 6th largest in the world and 3rd largest in Asia, but it should strive to become number one in the world. Describing chemicals and petrochemicals as the thrust areas, the Minister said that the Government is planning to develop the downstream industries near the refineries.  He said that a steering committee has been set up for PCPIR’s speedy implementation.

Referring to infrastructure, environmental and logistical issues hampering the growth of the industry, Shri Ananth Kumar said that there has been investment of $50 billion in the sector in last two years. The Minister said that BCPL in Assam has come into existence and BPCL in Kochi will start in December. He said that Ministry will facilitate brownfields. Talking about the human resource issues, Shri Ananth kumar said that there is huge need of skilled engineers and workers and his Ministry is going to set up special institutes for chemical engineering, technology, plastics, chemicals, and petrochemicals which will provide one lakh technicians and engineers per year. He said that it is unfortunate that after more than 60 years of independence, there were only 28 chemical and petrochemical institutes all over the India. In last two years, present government has approved 39 institutions.  During these two years, 11 institutes of chemical and petrochemical have been set up.

INDIA –CHEM 2016 is jointly organized by the Ministry of Chemicals & fertilizers and FICCI. The main event will be take place between 1 to 3  September, 2016 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon in Mumbai. The main  objective behind organizing the INDIA CHEM series is to highlight the investment possibilities in the country’s chemical industry and give a flip to ‘Make in India’ initiative of the government of India. Leading companies from all over the world predominantly from China, Japan, Russia, Spain, USA Germany, Italy and South East Asian countries will be  participating both as exhibitors and manufacturers all over the world pre-dominantly from China.
