Pune, April 5, 2020: The United States has started evacuating its citizens stranded in India amid the growing outbreak of the Coronavirus worldwide. Chartered aircraft will fly from New Delhi to San Francisco and Mumbai to Atlanta.

Pune City Police have facilitated the travel of 40 American citizens who were stranded in Pune, to Mumbai. The cops also evacuated 142 German nationals.

Last month, Principal Deputy Assistance Secretary of State Ian Brown is reported to have said about 1,500 Americans in the New Delhi region, between 600 and 700 in the Mumbai region, and 300 to 400 Americans from other states expressed interest in returning back to the USA.

The US State Department last month issued a ‘Level-4’ alert, advising citizens not to travel abroad and those who are abroad to return home. In an email sent by the US Department of Warning, “we have no idea how long this fight (from the Coronavirus) will continue. So at this time, it would be better for all of you to come back home to America.”

The email indicated that flights could also include green card holders and visa holders. It states that chartered aircraft flights to Mumbai will begin this weekend and fly to Atlanta. Flights from Mumbai are for Americans in the southern and western parts. Road transport will be arranged from Goa, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Valsad and Pune to Mumbai for those wishing to return to America.

At the same time, consulates in Chennai and Hyderabad are working to arrange domestic charter flights to bring Americans to Mumbai. The stranded Americans in North India have to fly from Delhi. Therefore, buses have been arranged to take the stranded citizens in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab etc. to Delhi.

Significantly, the US has launched a worldwide program to bring home stranded civilians in the midst of the rising outbreak of Coronavirus. The US started chartered flights from Bangladesh last week and earlier a sick person from Bhutan was also evacuated.

The number of Coronavirus infected persons in the US has reached 312,076 and the death toll has crossed 8,000. The US President Donald Trump has expressed fears that the death toll may reach 2 lakh.
