DSK’s brother detained at Mumbai while trying to escape

Mumbai/Pune, August 13, 2019 : Makrand Kulkarni, brother of builder D S Kulkarni, and an accused in the Rs 2,000 crore cheating case, was detained on Tuesday morning at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai, when he was about to fly outside the country. He was detained based on look out circular issued by Pune city police.

 

Pune police have already filed a charge sheet against D S Kulkarni, also known as DSK, his wife and others for allegedly cheating nearly 33,000 depositors and investors of nearly Rs 2043.18 crore. Makrand Kulkarni was on the run after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a court.

After being alerted about his detention, a team from Pune police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) left for Mumbai to take him into custody.

The economic offences wing (EOW) headed by then deputy commissioner of police Sudhir Hiremath investigated the case since October 2017, when the first depositor Jitendra Mulekar (56) approached Shivajinagar police station.

Following a six month long investigation, Pune city police filed a chargesheet against developer DS Kulkarni and his wife Hemanti for allegedly cheating thousands of depositors through various investment schemes. The chargesheet has pegged the total volume of fraud at Rs 2,043 crore.

They have been charged for offences under sections 120(B), 406, 409, 420, 465, 467, 468, 471, 109 r/w 34 IPC & 13(1)(c) r/w 13(2) of PC Act.
