Pune, September 19, 2017Gleneagles Global Health City, the largest facility of Gleneagles Global Hospitals, a Parkway Pantai enterprise, has successfully performed a heart and bilateral lung transplant on a 26 year old girl.  The surgery was performed by Dr Sandeep Attawar, Program Director and Chair Cardiac Surgeries, Thoracic Organ Transplant, Gleneagles Global Health City and his team on the 28th of May 2017 at the Gleneagles Global Health City in Perumbakkam, Chennai.

Ms. Komal Godase, hailing from Satara, had been experiencing symptoms associated with breathlessness on and off and loss of appetite.  Due to this Ms. Komal had lost 14 kgs very rapidly and was experiencing severe weakness.  Ms. Komal had started developing intense cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membrane) due to which she has been completely Oxygen dependent since March 2017.  Ms. Komal had visited many hospitals all over the country in order to get the proper diagnosis and treatment for her symptoms, but was unable to do so.  Doctors had prescribed some medicines but they too were unable to solve her issues.

Finally she was directed towards Dr. Attawar and his team at Gleneagles Global Health City in Chennai. Under  Dr. Attawar and his team’s supervision she finally found some respite.  At Gleneagles Global Health City, Ms. Komal was diagnosed with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension which is a rare disease characterized by elevated pulmonary artery pressure with no apparent cause, end stage lung disease and severe Right Ventricular failure. Dr. Attawar and his team briefed Ms. Komal and her family on her condition and informed them that the only treatment for this was heart and bilateral lung transplant. After stabilization, Ms. Komal was then discharged with a hope that she will receive the required organs for transplantation. Finally in May 2017 she received a call from Gleneagles Global Health City on the availability of organs and underwent the surgery on the 28th of the same month.

“Ms. Komal was very frail and confused when he was brought into our facility in Chennai. She had already undergone the ordeal of visiting many hospitals due to which the family and patient had lost all hope of recovery”, recalls Dr Sandeep Attawar, Program Director and Chair Cardiac Surgeries, Thoracic Organ Transplant, Gleneagles Global Health City.“We at Gleneagles Global Health City were very happy to receive a heart and pair of lungs that were a match for Ms. Komal and went ahead with the surgery as soon as possible. I am glad that the surgery was a huge success and that we were able to provide Ms. Komal and her family with some much needed respite.” Dr. Attawar added.

Dr Ravikumar, Associate Director Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiologist of the Heart transplant program at Gleneagles Global Health City, said “Heart and Lung transplantation is the only effective therapy for Primary Pulmonary Hypertenstion, which is a life threatening disease”

Dr. Attawar is one of the leading Cardio Thoracic Surgeons in the country, said, Mr. Saravanan Raman, Head – Business Development, Gleneagles Global Health City. “We at Gleneagles Global Health City are honoured to have a talisman such as him. I am very happy to state that thanks to him many of our patients have received a fresh lease on life. We at Gleneagles Global Health City have always looked to push the envelope to provide the best in healthcare for our patients. I am happy to report the success of our Cardio Thoracic program and hope to replicate it in other parts of the country as well. We are currently in talks with entering Pune with an association with a hospital soon. I hope to be back in Pune soon to make the announcement.”

The surgery was a success and Ms. Komal was then kept for a few more months for further observation.  Luckily the post-operative period was uneventful and Ms. Komal was discharged on the 27th of June 2017.  Ms. Komal and her family are very pleased with the result and are just glad that she can now continue to live her life normally.
