Public Lecture by Dr Vandana Shiva on `Climate Change: Role of Media and Citizens.’

Punekar News's photo.The 8th Prakash Kardaley Memorial Lecture, organised by the Prakash Kardaley Friends Forum wil be held on 19th December, 5 p m at Kale Hall, Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics, BMCC Road.

Internationally acclaimed environmentalist-activist, Dr Vandana Shiva, is the chief guest and the keynote speaker. She will speak on `Climate Change: Role of Media and Citizens.’

Dr. Rajendra Shende, former Director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and present Chairman of TERRE (Technology, Education, Research and Rehabilitation for the Environment) is the Guest of Honour and will preside over the function.

Dr. Vandana Shiva founded Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed, the promotion of organic farming and fair trade. For last two decades. Navdanya has worked with local communities and organizations serving more than 5,00,000 men and women farmers. Navdanya’s efforts have resulted in conservation of more than 3000 rice varieties from all over the country and have established 60seed banks in 16 states across the country.

Time Magazine identified Dr. Shiva as an environmental “hero” in 2003 and Asia Week has called her one of the five most powerful communicators of Asia.Forbes magazine in November 2010 has identified Dr. Vandana Shiva as one of the top Seven most Powerful Women on the Globe Among her many awards are the Alternative Nobel Prize (Right Livelihood Award, 1993), Order of the Golden Ark, Global 500 Award of UN and Earth Day International Award. Mr. Shende, former Director at United Nations Environment Programme, is a leading expert in sustainable technologies and policies. As head of the Paris based Ozon Action Programme of UNEP, he worked with the governments of 146 developing countries’ to develop their national management plans to eliminate use of Ozone Depleting Substances and to contribute to the mitigation of climate change. Through the teams of professionals and experts that he led from UNEP’s five offices worldwide i.e. Paris, Bangkok, Nairobi, Bahrain and Panama City he led the capacity building and technology support programme under the Multilateral Ozone Fund and Global Environmental Facility (GEF). The programme has contributed in stabilizing the Stratospheric Ozone Layer and preventing a global catastrophe by enabling developing countries to comply with the Montreal Protocol. The Montreal Protocol is now considered as the most successful Multilateral Environmental Agreement so far, having put the Ozone layer on the path to recovery.

Prakash Kardaley Friend’s Forum organizes an annual lecture in honour of Late Mr Prakash Kardaley, a renowned journalist (who was with The Indian Express for 40 years) and a pioneer in the RTI movement of India. Mr Kardaley was known for his incisive, citizen-oriented and public-empowerment journalism. He was also a stalwart RTI activist who awakened the urban masses of Maharashtra in using RTI, when the law was at its nascent stage. He worked very closely with Anna Hazare during the implementation and for propagation of RTI in Maharashtra. He was one of the crusaders who was part of the team to draft the National RTI Act. At a time when e-networking was relatively new, he had networked activists throughout the country through the humjanengeyahoo discussion group. He had also worked very closely with Arvind Kejriwal in the RTI movement.

The Prakash Kardaley Memorial Lecture is one of the prestigious events in the city’s calendar for socially aware citizens, media students and professionals. The eminent speakers for this memorial lecture have been: Aruna Roy, Arvind Kejriwal & Vinita Kamte, Shailesh Gandhi, Kiran Bedi& Anna Hazare, Rajdeep Sardesai, N Ram and, Chitra Subramaniam-Duella .
