Pune GRP busts inter-state gang of thieves who stole rail passengers’ goods

Pune: Sleuths from the Government Railway Police (GRP), Pune, have nabbed a seven member gang of thieves who used to steal passengers’ goods in trains. The local crime branch (LCB) of GRP has recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 6 lakhs from their possession.

Superintendent of Police (GRP,Pune) Dr Prabhakar Budhwant told Punekar News, “The thieves moved in groups. Some of them diverted attention of the passengers, while some used to steal their bags. They used to enter in crowded coaches. While someone would spread newspaper pretending to be reading it but in reality he would do it deliberately to hide passengers view on their bags. And their accomplices would either steal bags or take out valuable goods from the bags”.

The arrests were made at Pune railway station based on tip-off received by policeman Satish Dhole that two thieves would be arriving at the station. A trap was laid on July 13 on platform number three of the station when Pune-Nanded passenger train was to arrive. And two accused identified as Vikas Kumar Virendra Mandal (28) of Khagariya and Rajiv Indradev Yadav (20) of Munger in Bihar, were arrested.

Later their five accomplices who were standing at Agarwal Lodge were also arrested. They have been identified as Ishwar Chandra Saha (45), Bhavish Kumar Muso Mandal (20), Ajay Yogendra Yadav (35), Parwesh Kumar Mandal (24), all residents of Khagariya district in Bihar, and Pankaj Nageshwar Singh of Bhagalpur district in Bihar.

“With their arrest we have solved eight theft cases registered with Pune GRP”, said Additional SP (GRP, Pune) Tushar Doshi.

LCB investigation team included Police Inspector Nandkumar Ghorpade, Police Sub Inspector Babanrao Gaikwad, and police personnel Anil Dangat, Sunil Mane, Ajay Kamble, Suresh Raskar, Mahesh Kardile, Pawan Borate, Kishore Bodke, Jagdish Sawant, and Subhash Nanaware.
