Pune, February 15, 2020 : A one day International Conference on Nuclear Waste Management in India organised by Symbiosis Law School Pune on February 15, 9 am onwards at the Professional Development and Continuing Legal Education Hall.

The conference was presided by Prof. Shashikala Gurpur, Director Symbiosis Law School, Pune Dean Faculty of Law, SIU.

Dr.Gurpur deliberated upon existing loopholes, legal and administrative, that needed to be studied in order to establish safety standards and measures, cases and goals aligned with the precautionary principle and sustainability.

She finally concluded her speech on a hopeful note, that this conference would be instrumental in conceiving a policy reform proposal for the government to address such concerns.

The Thematic introduction was given by Dr. Yogesh Patil, Head Research and Publication. Informing about the various environmental issues to the nuclear waste management is not of a little cost.

The main aim of the conference is to put an address on the importance of managing nuclear waste by addressing the participants about its importance.

Currently managing nuclear waste have been storage and segregation for short lived waste, near surface disposal for low and some intermediate level waste and burying in deep geological or transmutation for high level waste.

She further explained what open fuel cycle is and about the close fuel cycle. Open fuel cycle starts with mining of uranium and ends up with nuclear waste. In case of close fuel cycle if the spent fuel is not processed then the fuel cycle is referred as open fuel cycle.

Rather than this there are multiple benefits to cure human health through this. India is a leading country where we follow close fuel cycle.

Various environmental issues such as global warming, acid rain, air pollution, climate change, underground water depletion, water pollution and the list continues.
