Pune, Maharashtra, 29 July 2019 : Akash Dhanurkar (22) and Hitakshi Kathuria (18), studying second year journalism and mass communication course, have come up with a novel named ‘Kanya — A Green Ocean of Regression!’

The novel is inspired by a true incident from Pune, shedding light on depression, drug addiction and one of the rare and deadliest skin diseases’ in this world. The book was launched on Saturday, 27 July, 2019 in presence of one of the most renowned writers and activist, Deepa Tai Deshmukh as a Chief Guest.

While addressing the book launch event, Deshmukh said, “There is greater need to address such issues, and I am optimistic that such books are being written after learning from our mistakes in past. Depression and Drug addiction is often viewed with a wrong mindset.”

She further added, “Based on my years of research and study on depression and drug addiction, I personally feel that we a person battling depression cannot be recognized at the first place. Most of the people who are battling depression are hard to be recognized and hence there is greater need to broaden our mindsets to understand the concept of depression before we fight for them who are suffering. People suffering from depression are often the victims of drug addiction.”

Further speaking on the book, she added, “Kanya — A Green Ocean of Regression is being led by two young writers, and that suggests that there is growing awareness among the youths about depression and drug addiction. Such stories which can bring about a positive change in the society must be brought out, and this book relates multiple things by highlighting how a mediocre family suffers one of the rare and deadliest skin diseases in the world, which itself speaks thousand sorrows and losses.”

Akash Dhanurkar, one of the two authors, said, “I was never a writer, neither did I ever wanted to be. But after I lost my sister to depression, I thought of coming up with a story that could change our mindsets towards them who do not show up on what is killing them from inside, and keep absorbing the pain. I did not know what is depression, but when I lost my sister, I realized what depression actually is. However, our book highlights some major aspects on one of the rare and deadliest skin diseases in the world, Stevens Johnson Syndrome. I will continue writing on the social topics which shall bring about a positive change.”

Hitakshi Kathuria added, “I feel that getting depressed and battling depression are two different aspects. The day we stop mixing these two terms, we shall consider it as a victory of our ‘Kanya’. How many of them we lose to depression? We have carried an aim of changing mindsets through this story.”

The authors said that the book has been made available on Amazon and other platforms. “So far, we have had received a good and appreciable response for the book”, they informed. They are studying at Indira School of Communication, Pune.
