UP govt to release Bhim Army chief Ravan before Diwali

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh – The government of Uttar Pradesh has decided to release Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar alias Ravan, who is jailed under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) charges in connection with 2017 Saharanpur caste violence case. He would be released on November 1 officials said.

Ravan is lodged in jail for the last 16 months.

The Ambedkar Army or Bhim Army Bharat Ekta Mission or Bhim Army, also written as Bheem Army, is a Bahujan-rights organisation in India. It was founded in 2014 by Chandrashekhar Azad and Vinay Ratan Singh (also national president Bhim Army for the development of Dalits, lower castes shudra and other marginalized sections of society. The organisation is working for Dalit emancipation through education. It runs free schools for Dalits in western Uttar Pradesh. They now run more than 300 schools across Saharanpur.

It became prominent after caste clashes in Uttar Pradesh. Azad was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force based on allegations of violence under the draconian National Security Act which allows the arrest of anyone under “preventive detention” at Saharanpur.

Bhim army organised two big rallies in Jantar-Mantar (New delhi) and thousands of dalit protesters gathered under the banner of their army to protest against the atrocities they continue to face and to demand the release of their founder.
