Pune Prepares for More Rain: Orange Alert Issued Amidst Intense Showers
Pune, 11th May 2024: Pune city encountered heavy pre-monsoon showers on Friday, with the eastern suburb of Lohegaon recording the highest rainfall of 58mm. Within a span of 55 minutes, areas like Chandannagar, MG Road, Sangvi, Bibvewadi, Koregaon Park, Range Hills, Kothrud, Karve Road, and Swargate witnessed waterlogging.
Friday’s rainfall marked the most substantial pre-monsoon precipitation of the season thus far, with Lohegaon experiencing particularly intense activity. Vimannagar also faced similar conditions.
Meteorologists attributed the intense showers to soaring temperatures combined with moisture incursion from a prevailing weather system, creating ideal conditions for the formation of thunderclouds. Pune district remains on an orange alert until May 12.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a national forecast indicating a cyclonic circulation over central Madhya Pradesh, along with an east-west trough extending from northwest Rajasthan to south Assam in the lower tropospheric levels. This weather pattern may result in isolated to scattered rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph across Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Chhattisgarh from May 10-14. Additionally, hailstorms are expected over Vidarbha on May 12-13, Madhya Maharashtra on May 11-12, and Marathwada on May 12.
The Fire Force Control Room received numerous calls reporting incidents such as fallen trees, particularly from Kondhwa Khurd, Dhayari Road, and Bhavani Peth. An incident of trees catching fire due to lightning was reported in Hadapsar, along with minor short circuits in two locations. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
