Pune District Sees 73 Zika Cases Since June; City Total Reaches 66
Pune, 6th August 2024: The number of Zika virus cases in Pune is on the rise, with the city’s total reaching 66. Four patients have died from the virus, prompting an investigation by a committee from the Public Health Department. Recent heavy rains, coupled with stagnant water and increased dirt, have heightened the risk of infection.
The surge in cases has alarmed both residents and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Health Department. Of the 66 reported cases in Pune, 26 involve pregnant women, who, along with children and the elderly, are particularly vulnerable to the virus. The PMC Health Department is closely monitoring all infected individuals and their contacts and implementing necessary precautions.
A 19-year-old pregnant woman from Bavdhan, 22 weeks into her pregnancy, has been confirmed with Zika, contributing to the total number of infections in the city. Between Saturday and Monday, Pune reported eight new cases, including six pregnant women, a 40-year-old man from Katraj, and an 18-year-old boy from Kondhwa. Last week, six pregnant women tested positive, with five cases emerging over the weekend. Affected individuals include a 33-year-old from Dhanori, a 23-year-old from Kharadi, and three women aged 21, along with a 22-year-old from Shivajinagar.
Since 20th June, Pune district has recorded 73 Zika cases, including 66 in Pune city, five in Pune Rural, and two in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Additionally, four suspected deaths related to Zika have been reported earlier in Pune.
