Rajgurunagar, 27th January 2025: A marketing stunt in Rajgurunagar, Pune, went awry when a clothing shop’s ₹1 dress offer on Republic Day drew an uncontrollable crowd, forcing the shopkeeper to shut down the store and prompting police intervention.

The shopkeeper had launched the promotional offer, targeting women shoppers, as part of the Republic Day celebrations on 26th January. News of the deal spread like wildfire, fueled by social media and word of mouth, drawing hundreds of customers to the store. By noon, an enormous crowd, predominantly women, had gathered outside the shop, causing severe traffic congestion on Rajgurunagar and Bhimashankar roads.

The situation spiraled out of control when the shop ran out of stock and the shopkeeper decided to close. This enraged the women, who accused the shopkeeper of misleading them. Many women grew agitated, threatening to damage the shop if they weren’t allowed to purchase the dresses for ₹1 as promised.

The chaos prompted officials from the Khed Police Station to rush to the scene to diffuse tensions. The police intervened to mediate between the angry customers and the shopkeeper, eventually bringing the situation under control.

According to eyewitnesses, the shop had initially included terms and conditions for the ₹1 offer, but the overwhelming number of customers made it impossible for the staff to manage. The shopkeeper, overwhelmed by the response, decided to lock the premises for safety reasons.

The incident highlights the risks of poorly planned promotional campaigns, especially in high-density areas like Pune, which has gained a reputation as both an educational hub and a thriving wholesale market. While the offer aimed to attract customers, it instead resulted in traffic snarls, public outrage, and police involvement.
