Survey Reveals Concerns Over Bias in English Proficiency Tests Among Indian Test-Takers

New Delhi, 24th February 2025: A recent survey by Pearson has highlighted significant concerns among Indian English test-takers regarding potential biases in language proficiency exams. The findings indicate that 62% of respondents fear their Indian accent could negatively affect their speaking test scores, while over 74% worry that their appearance may influence their results when evaluated by a human examiner.

The survey, conducted among 1,000 individuals who have either taken or plan to take an English proficiency test for work, study, or migration purposes, sheds light on test-takers’ perceptions of fairness in assessment. It reveals that 96% of respondents have undergone an English test with a human examiner, leading to concerns about subjective biases.

“Many test-takers feel that factors unrelated to their language skills—such as accents, clothing, or skin tone—might influence their performance evaluation,” a Pearson spokesperson stated.

The survey further found that 59% of participants believe they might be judged differently based on their skin color, fearing a bias in favor of individuals with lighter complexions. Nearly 64% of respondents expressed concerns that their choice of attire could create an unintended negative impression, a perception particularly prevalent in Maharashtra, where 67% of test-takers share this belief.

Additionally, job status and educational qualifications emerged as factors influencing perceptions of bias. Seven in ten respondents, particularly in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, feel that individuals with prestigious jobs or strong academic credentials receive more respectful treatment.

Accents also play a significant role in test-takers’ concerns. The survey revealed that over 60% of respondents, particularly from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, believe that modifying or neutralizing their Indian accent could improve their test scores.

The findings underscore the importance of ensuring fairness and objectivity in language assessments, with experts calling for evaluation systems that focus solely on linguistic ability rather than external factors.
