Pune, 3rd April 2025: A notorious criminal who posed as a police officer to rob people has been arrested by the Vishrambaug Police. The accused, Jafar Shahajaman Irani (41), was involved in 20 robbery cases across Pune and Solapur.

Jafar Irani primarily targeted elderly women, approaching them on a two-wheeler while wearing a helmet. Posing as a police officer, he would warn them about recent thefts and instruct them to remove their jewelry for safekeeping. If they hesitated, he would snatch their gold and flee.

In addition to this, he duped people into handing over their two-wheelers by falsely claiming there was a police case against their vehicle. He used stolen bikes with fake number plates to commit these crimes.

The case came to light after a woman reported a gold chain snatching incident in Shaniwar Peth. A police team, led by Sub-Inspector Manoj Barure, analyzed CCTV footage, which helped them identify the accused.

The police then set a trap and arrested Jafar Irani, recovering 323 grams of stolen gold, ₹1.25 lakh in cash, and three stolen two-wheelers. The total value of the recovered items is approximately ₹30 lakh.

The operation was conducted under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police Praveenkumar Patil, Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Singh Gill, and Assistant Commissioner Sainath Thombre. The team included officers Vijayamala Pawar, Arun Ghodke, Manoj Barure, and others.
