Pune: PMC Deploys Fog Cannon Machines To Tackle Rising Air Pollution
Pune, 4th April 2025: In a significant step toward curbing rising air pollution in Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced five fog cannon machines under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), funded by the 15th Finance Commission. These machines will be used specifically to reduce airborne particulate matter—PM10 and PM2.5—across pollution-prone areas of the city.
A demonstration of the fog cannon technology was recently conducted in the presence of PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP along with officials and staff from the Environment Department.
The fog cannons work by spraying a fine mist of water in areas with high dust concentrations. This process helps airborne dust particles settle to the ground, thereby reducing their presence in the atmosphere. Each machine is powered by CNG and is equipped with a 6,000-litre water tank. At the rear, a high-capacity 3 kV pump with 22 nozzles emits micro-droplets of water, as fine as 50 microns, under high pressure.
These machines have already proven effective in cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Mira-Bhayandar, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Their deployment in Pune is expected to significantly aid in controlling deteriorating air quality.
The fog cannons will initially be used on the following routes:
– Karve Road (PMC building to Warje)
– Satara Road (Swargate – Katraj – Kondhwa)
– Solapur Road (Swargate – Shewalewadi)
– Sangamwadi – Yerawada – Kesanand Phata
– Sinhagad Road (Dandekar Bridge – Dhayari Phata)
