Pune: Casteist Remarks on Housing Society WhatsApp Group Lead to Atrocities Act Case in Hinjawadi
Hinjawadi, 2nd July 2025: A case under The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 has been registered in Pune’s Hinjawadi after caste-related slurs were allegedly made in a housing society’s WhatsApp group.
The incident took place on Tuesday at the ITrend Homes Housing Society in Phase 2, Hinjawadi. Ramesh Ahire (37) has filed a complaint with the Hinjawadi Police Station, following which a case was registered against Saurav Suman (38), a resident of the same society.
According to police reports, both the complainant and the accused are members of the ITrend Owners WhatsApp group. On Tuesday night, an argument between the two escalated and details of the dispute were shared in the group. During this exchange, the accused allegedly made caste-related comments, referring to the complainant’s Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe background, which the complainant found insulting and humiliating in front of the community.
Additionally, the accused reportedly threatened the complainant by saying, “I’ll come to your house and settle this.”
Hinjawadi Police are investigating the case further.
