Massive Multi-Vehicle Collision on Mumbai-Pune Expressway Near Khopoli; No Deaths, Several Injured
Khopoli, 26th July 2025: A major vehicular pile-up involving 15 to 20 vehicles disrupted traffic and triggered panic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Khopoli early Saturday morning. The mishap occurred on the Mumbai-bound lane, between the new tunnel stretch and the food mall hotel, falling under the jurisdiction of Khopoli Police Station.
Container Truck Brake Failure Likely Caused the Crash:
Initial reports suggest the accident was sparked by a brake failure in a container truck descending the ghat section. The heavy vehicle lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles ahead, setting off a chain-reaction crash involving cars and other goods carriers.
Eyewitness accounts painted a grim picture of the crash site. Several vehicles were severely damaged, with some completely crushed under the container’s impact. Both private cars and commercial vehicles were involved in the incident, and the scene was one of widespread destruction, they said.
Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far. However, multiple passengers sustained injuries, ranging from minor to moderate. Those hurt were quickly rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of people injured.
Responding rapidly, Khopoli Police, along with fire brigade teams and ambulances, reached the site to carry out rescue and relief operations. Injured passengers were extracted from the wreckage and administered first aid on the spot before being shifted to hospitals.
The Mumbai-bound lane experienced severe traffic congestion due to the pile-up. Police personnel have been deployed to manage traffic flow and divert vehicles through alternate routes.
Authorities have begun a detailed investigation. While brake failure is being considered the primary cause, inquiries will also examine factors like vehicle condition, possible overloading, driver error, and road surface conditions.
Travelers heading towards Mumbai via the expressway are advised to delay their travel or use alternate routes until the traffic is cleared. Cleanup and towing operations are underway, and more updates are expected soon.
