FDA to Conduct Hygiene Checks at All Food Plazas on Pune-Mumbai Expressway After Cafe Complaint
Pune, 5th August 2025: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a comprehensive inspection drive targeting all food outlets located along the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, following hygiene-related complaints at the expressway branch of Café Goodluck.
The decision comes after a customer reportedly found a dead cockroach in an egg bhurji served at the outlet on July 25, prompting the FDA to issue a notice to the food plaza.
“We plan to carry out inspections at all expressway food plazas to ensure adherence to hygiene norms and licensing requirements,” said Milind Mahangade, Assistant Commissioner of the FDA (Raigad division).
“Our food safety officers will check for pest control measures, sanitary conditions, and valid documentation over the next month.”
The inspections will be guided by Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, which outlines the minimum hygiene and sanitary requirements for food establishments.
While a compliance report has since been submitted by Café Goodluck and a re-inspection has been carried out, the FDA is still awaiting lab results from food samples collected at the site.
“We revisited the premises after the outlet submitted its compliance report. The required improvements were made as per our guidelines, but we are still reviewing the food sample results,” said an FDA official familiar with the case.
The incident has left some travellers wary of eating at food courts along the expressway, especially during the monsoon.
