Pune: 11-Year-Old Girl Dead, Mother Injured in Hinjawadi Hit-and-Run; Truck Driver Arrested
Hinjawadi, 15th August 2025: A road accident in Hinjawadi Phase II on Tuesday claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl and left her mother seriously injured after a cement mixer truck rammed into their scooter and sped away. Police arrested the accused driver a day later.
The victim, identified as Pratyusha Borate from Maan near Hinjawadi, was a Class V student. Her mother, who was riding the scooter, is undergoing treatment at a city hospital.
Pratyusha’s father, Santosh Borate, said the mother-daughter duo had gone out to choose a Ganesh idol when the incident occurred. “They had stopped by the roadside when the cement mixer suddenly hit their scooter. The driver didn’t stop. My daughter died on the spot,” he said, his voice choked with grief.
Borate added that local residents, angered by the accident, chased down the vehicle and smashed its windscreen, forcing the driver to abandon it and flee. He was later tracked down and arrested by Hinjawadi police under Pimpri Chinchwad police.
“We want strict action against heavy vehicles that flout restrictions on plying through Hinjawadi’s roads,” Borate demanded.
Police said the driver, Farhan Munnu Shaikh (25), a native of Bihar, has been booked under relevant sections for causing death by negligence, rash driving, and failing to stop after an accident. There is a ban on entry of heavy vehicles in Hinjawadi between 8 am and noon as well as between 4 pm and 9 pm.
“These are not ‘accidents’ anymore. They are the result of negligence, lack of enforcement, and a complete absence of accountability. Time and again, such tragedies occur, yet there is no strict action. How many more must die before something changes? How long will we continue to tolerate this? The solution is possible—stricter control on heavy vehicles, proper monitoring, and responsibility from the authorities. But unless action is taken now, the fear will continue, and more innocent lives will be lost”, a local resident said.
