Pimpri-Chinchwad, 16th August 2025: In a tragic incident on Independence Day, three contract workers died of suffocation while working inside a BSNL inspection chamber in Nigdi.

The deceased have been identified as Datta Holare, Lakhan Dhaare, and Sahebrao Girsep. According to police, the men had entered the underground chamber to carry out optical fiber-related work when the accident occurred.

There were four workers at the site. The chamber reportedly had about three feet of water inside. As per initial information, one worker began suffocating after entering the chamber. In an attempt to rescue him, the second worker went in, followed by the third. All three collapsed inside due to a lack of oxygen.

The fourth worker, Babasaheb Wagh, avoided entering the chamber. He raised an alarm, following which the fire brigade rushed to the spot. The trapped workers were pulled out and taken to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared them dead on arrival.

Nigdi police have confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation. Further investigation is underway.
