Pune, 1st September 2025: The heart of Pune’s festive season came alive on Sunday as devotees thronged Naldurga and other central city locations to witness the lively enactment of the Khandoba-Banu wedding ceremony, a traditional highlight during Ganesh Chaturthi.

As the song rang out — “Khanderaaya Devaraaya… You have come to Naldurga with a bang, let’s take Banubaya… Banubaya… Banubaya… Banubaya…” — the enthusiastic crowd erupted into applause and whistles. Children, parents, and young adults alike were swept up in the drama, watching every detail of the live performance unfold with fascination. Sunday being a holiday added to the crowd, allowing families to spend the day together at the festive venues.

The central areas of Pune, including Sadashiv Peth, Shanipar, Nagnath Par, Natubaag, Hirabag, and Tilak Chowk, were dotted with themed scenes that captivated spectators. Some depicted Chhatrapati Shivaji’s valour, others recreated historic temples, and several highlighted social issues, blending culture, history, and civic awareness. Many visitors were busy capturing these vivid scenes on their cameras, eager to preserve memories of the spectacle.

The arrival of Gauri Puja on Sunday initially kept the afternoon crowd relatively moderate. However, by evening, devotees had flocked in larger numbers. Children, especially, were keen to see Ganesh darshan and the live performances, prompting a surge in the number of families and women making their way to the celebrations. The temporary respite from rain seemed to double the enthusiasm, turning the streets into a veritable sea of devotees.

Special attention was given to managing the throngs at iconic spots such as Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati and Babu Genu Mandal. Police personnel, along with mandal volunteers, guided the crowd with patience and ensured that darshan proceeded smoothly despite the tight security arrangements. Key roads were closed to traffic, while volunteers coordinated with motorists to prevent disturbances for the devotees.

Food stalls became an essential part of the festivities, catering to the devotees’ cravings. Classic street foods like vada pav, bhaji, sandwiches, and bhel were savored by visitors even as they watched the vibrant scenes unfold on the streets. The aroma of these delicacies mingled with the festive sounds, adding another sensory layer to the celebration.

Sunday’s events exemplified the perfect blend of devotion, culture, and community spirit, as families came together to enjoy both the spiritual and the theatrical aspects of Ganesh Chaturthi.

From the rhythmic songs to the intricate tableaux, Pune’s central areas were transformed into a living canvas, celebrating heritage, joy, and the shared love for Ganpati Bappa.
