Sindhudurg, 5th September 2025: The Sindhudurg district administration has ordered the closure of the Talere–Gaganbawada–Kolhapur highway (NH-166G) until September 12, 2025, after a massive landslide blocked the Karul Ghat stretch of the road.

According to officials from the National Highways Division, Ratnagiri, the landslide has completely obstructed vehicular traffic. Debris clearance is in progress on a war footing, with an expert engineering team deployed to conduct inspections and “loose scaling” to reduce the risk of further rockfalls. Authorities estimate it will take at least a week to safely restore movement.

Alternative Routes for Commuters
To keep traffic flowing, vehicles are being diverted via:
Bhuibawda Ghat (State Highway 171)
Fonda Ghat (State Highway 178)

Traffic authorities have been instructed to place signboards and indicators at all diversion points for commuters’ convenience.

The closure has been enforced under Section 116 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, citing public safety and disaster management. Experts note that Karul Ghat is a landslide-prone zone, with a history of recurring rockfalls and vertical cracks in its terrain.

District officials said stabilization work would be prioritized to prevent future accidents and ensure smoother traffic movement once the road reopens.
Meanwhile, commuters have been advised to avoid non-essential travel through the affected area until clearance operations are completed.
