20-Year-Old Engineering Student Injured in Firecracker Mishap in Pune; Suffers Eye Burns, Partial Vision Loss
Pune, 20th October 2025: A 20-year-old Nepali student pursuing her third year of engineering in Pune sustained serious injuries to both her eyes after a decorative firecracker exploded near her face on Sunday night. The incident occurred in the Sinhagad Road area while she was celebrating Diwali.
According to doctors, the young woman, identified as Madhumita (name changed), suffered burns to her eyelids and damage to the irises of both eyes, resulting in decreased vision. She is currently undergoing treatment at Dudhabhate Netralaya, located in Manik Bagh on Sinhagad Road.
Firecracker burst near her face before shooting up
The accident took place when Madhumita lit a colorful, alcohol-based decorative firecracker using incense. Before she could move away, sparks and flames suddenly flew toward her face, burning her eyelids and injuring both eyes. The firecracker then shot up into the sky.
Eyewitnesses and neighbors rushed her to Dudhabhate Netralaya, where ophthalmologist Dr. Anil Dudhabhate examined her. “Both her irises were burned, and her vision has decreased,” Dr. Dudhabhate said. “Fortunately, surgery will not be required, but it will take about two weeks for her eyes to recover. She will need to visit the hospital regularly for check-ups and follow-up care.”
Detailed medical evaluation conducted
Dr. Dudhabhate and his team performed detailed examinations, including sonography and iris measurements, to assess the extent of the injury. Medication was immediately administered to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
He explained that the patient continues to experience pain, irritation, and discomfort in the eyes but is showing signs of gradual improvement. “The injuries are severe but manageable with timely treatment,” he said.
Doctor warns of firecracker safety risks
Highlighting the recurring risk of such incidents during Diwali, Dr. Dudhabhate urged people to handle fireworks responsibly. “Accidents caused by firecrackers pose a danger to everyone. Always buy good-quality crackers, maintain distance while lighting them, and ensure adult supervision,” he advised.
He also cautioned against applying ointments or home remedies in case of burns. “If a firecracker accident occurs, wash the face immediately with clean water and consult an ophthalmologist without delay,” he added.
Safety reminder for festive celebrations
Every year, hospitals in Pune report several cases of eye and burn injuries caused by mishandling firecrackers. Doctors have once again appealed to citizens to celebrate responsibly and prioritize safety during the festive season.
