Pune Court Orders Drunk Driver to Distribute 1,000 Handbills on Road Safety
Pimpri Chinchwad, 29th October 2025: In an unusual punishment aimed at spreading awareness about road safety, the Pune Motor Vehicle Court has directed a 28-year-old man, caught driving under the influence of alcohol, to print and distribute 1,000 pamphlets warning against drunk driving at traffic junctions across the city.
According to officials from the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic branch, the accused was caught driving under the influence of liquor in the Hinjawadi area on July 22 this year. Following the investigation, a case was filed against him under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
“The Motor Vehicle Court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 23 of the BNSS and also ordered the accused to distribute 1,000 awareness handbills among motorists. The aim is to make him realize the consequences of drunk driving and encourage others to avoid such offences,” a traffic police officer said.
Police officials said such corrective punishments are part of efforts to promote responsible driving habits among citizens. From January to September this year, Pimpri Chinchwad police have booked 2,984 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol and initiated court proceedings in each case.
Authorities have reiterated that enforcement drives against drunk driving will continue across the city, especially during the festive season, to ensure road safety.
