Police Team Booked for Assault, Caste Abuse in Pune
Kothrud, 16th November 2025: Eight people, including six serving police personnel, a retired officer and a civilian, have been booked for allegedly assaulting and using casteist slurs against a young woman during a detention operation carried out by a police team from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
The woman filed a complaint at Kothrud police station on Saturday, following which a case was registered under sections related to atrocities, assault, kidnapping, unlawful entry and robbery.
Those booked include Assistant Inspector Amol Kamthe of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Police, Constable Sanjeevani Shinde, Cyber Department officer Dhananjay Sanap, Vinod Pardeshi, Assistant Inspector Prema Patil of Kothrud police station, Constable Shruti Kadhne, retired police officer Sakharam Sanap from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and a friend of officer Prema Patil. The investigation has now been handed over to an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)–level officer.

Earlier, a case had been registered against the complainant under charges of obstructing government work after she argued with the police. The woman later approached the Shivajinagar court, alleging that she was beaten and subjected to caste-based abuse at the police station. She also claimed that Rs 5,000 and gold ornaments were stolen from her cupboard during the operation. The court directed police to register a case based on her complaint, leading to the FIR.
According to police, the incident began after a married woman from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar was reported missing by her in-laws. Technical analysis indicated that she was staying in the Kothrud area, prompting a team from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to reach Pune with assistance from Kothrud police. During the detention process, a friend of the woman had filed a complaint accusing the girls of obstructing police work. The detained girls, however, alleged that the police assaulted them and used casteist language, which has now resulted in the registration of the case.
