Onion Prices Rise in Pune Wholesale Market Amid Supply Crunch

Pune, 17th December 2025: Onion prices have begun rising in Pune’s wholesale markets amid increased exports to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, higher demand from southern states, and a decline in the availability of old stock. Wholesale prices have increased by around ₹12 per kg over the past week, traders said.

At the Market Yard, onions that were selling at ₹10 to ₹15 per kg on December 10 were traded between ₹11 and ₹27 per kg on December 16. Traders noted that prices had remained low since April due to ample supply, but the market dynamics have now shifted.

According to market sources, Bangladesh has stepped up onion imports from India, while demand has also risen from Sri Lanka and southern India. At the same time, stocks of old onions are nearing exhaustion. Prolonged rainfall has affected the new crop, resulting in lower output and smaller-sized bulbs, which has further pushed up prices.

The market is currently receiving old onions from Parner, Shrigonda and other parts of Ahilyanagar district, as well as from Ambegaon in Pune district. Daily arrivals of old onions have dropped from 120–130 trucks last week to around 100 trucks at present. Fresh arrivals of new onions remain limited and are fetching prices between ₹10 and ₹25 per kg, depending on quality.

Traders said onion prices had remained subdued for the past eight months, but the changing supply-demand scenario has triggered the recent increase. Demand from hotels is also expected to rise during the Christmas and New Year holiday season, which could push prices higher in the coming days.
