Hinjawadi, 5th January 2026: Pune Metro Line 3, connecting Maan–Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar, has achieved a key milestone with the successful completion of the mandatory safety inspection by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The clearance is a critical prerequisite for the commencement of metro operations and brings the much-awaited corridor a step closer to becoming operational.

The Line 3 project, aimed at improving connectivity between Pune’s IT hub of Hinjawadi and the city centre, is currently in the final stages of execution. Ahead of the RDSO inspection, trial runs of metro trains were conducted four to five times on a section of the corridor covering up to four stations.

With the RDSO clearance in place, the project has now entered the final phase before commissioning. As metro systems across cities are developed using varied technologies and supplied by different manufacturers, RDSO plays a crucial role in ensuring that these systems are compatible with Indian operating conditions and railway safety standards.

During the inspection, RDSO assesses multiple safety and technical parameters, including train structure, coach dimensions, track geometry, power supply systems, emergency braking mechanisms, coach stability, and performance on curves. Train behaviour at higher speeds is also monitored to ensure vibrations and movements remain within permissible safety limits. Metro services cannot be opened to passengers without RDSO certification.

According to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), progress in the procurement of rolling stock has also been satisfactory. Fourteen metro trainsets have been received so far, while a total of 22 trainsets are expected as per the approved schedule.

These trainsets will be used for phased testing, extended trial runs, and preparations for regular passenger services. Authorities are planning to complete construction work at select stations and begin partial operations of Pune Metro Line 3 by March 2026.
