Pune, 6th February 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to cancel all cultural and celebratory programmes planned for its Foundation Day on February 15, following the demise of Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar. The move follows criticism over continuing with festivities during a period of mourning observed across Maharashtra.

Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram stated that the occasion will now be marked only by a simple internal administrative meeting, focused on reaffirming the corporation’s commitment to delivering improved civic services.

“There will be no celebrations or cultural events. Considering the tragic loss, it would not be appropriate to hold festivities,” Ram said, confirming that the decision was taken at his level.

Inquiry into PMPML Recruitment:
Alongside the announcement, the Commissioner revealed that an administrative probe has been ordered into allegations of irregularities in recruitment and promotions within the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML).

Ram said multiple complaints had been received regarding recruitment procedures. Although PMPML operates as a separate entity, he has issued a notice to its administration directing a detailed inquiry. He added that strict action would follow wherever wrongdoing is proven.

The Commissioner also indicated that the city would soon witness intensified action against illegal encroachments, signaling a stronger enforcement drive.

Zero-Waste Initiative Launched in Kasba–Bhavani:
The remarks came during the launch of Pune’s first “Zero Waste Kasba–Bhavani Project”, a joint initiative between PMC and waste management cooperative SWaCH. The project forms part of the administration’s broader ambition to make Pune one of India’s cleanest cities by December 2026.

“We are committed to making Pune truly clean and beautiful. Door-to-door cleanliness drives are already underway in the Kasba constituency,” Ram said.

MLA Hemant Rasane, present at the launch along with newly elected corporators, noted that residents have responded positively to cleanliness efforts. He added that special drives will target unauthorized banners and hoardings, with a goal of making the constituency clean and well-organized within 90 days.

Officials emphasized that while PMC Foundation Day is traditionally celebrated with public programmes, this year’s observance will remain solemn and service-oriented. Instead of festivities, the administration plans to use the occasion to renew its pledge toward better civic governance.

The decisions underline PMC’s attempt to balance public sentiment, administrative accountability, and civic responsibility during a sensitive period for the state.
