Pune: Viral Video Allegedly Showing Schoolgirls Smoking Near Balewadi School Raises Concerns
Balewadi, 9th March 2026: A video circulating widely on social media has sparked concern among residents after it allegedly showed two schoolgirls smoking near a roadside kiosk in Pune’s Balewadi area, close to a school in the locality.
According to information shared online, the video was reportedly recorded near a school in the Balewadi area. In the footage, two school students (girls) are seen walking toward a roadside stall, locally known as a “tapri.” Moments later, the girls appear to light a cigarette while standing beside the kiosk.
The footage appears to have been captured from inside a parked car positioned some distance away from the spot. The individual who recorded the video is believed to have used a discreet or hidden camera while filming. The person recording the clip did not approach or intervene while the incident was taking place.
The identities and exact ages of the individuals seen in the clip have not been officially confirmed. However, several social media users have speculated that the girls appear to be minors, prompting concern among parents and residents about the possible access of tobacco products to underage individuals.
Under existing regulations in Maharashtra, the sale and consumption of tobacco products, including cigarettes, is prohibited for individuals below the age of 18. Vendors are required to verify the age of customers before selling such products.
Residents in Balewadi say that while many shopkeepers in Pune follow these rules and refuse to sell tobacco products to minors, some vendors allegedly continue to ignore the restrictions.
Local residents have also claimed that instances of teenagers smoking in public spaces have been noticed in some parts of the city in recent months. Following the circulation of the video, citizens have called for stricter monitoring of tobacco sales near schools and educational institutions.
Residents have urged enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with laws designed to prevent minors from accessing tobacco products.
