Pune, 6th May 2026: Even as demand for recreational facilities rises during the summer break, several Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) swimming pools and sports complexes remain shut, drawing criticism from residents.

Civic officials said around 10 PMC-run swimming pools and 38 sports complexes across the city are currently non-operational due to ongoing repairs, maintenance work and delays in renewing contracts with private operators. The PMC manages 35 swimming pools and 108 sports complexes across its wards.

Among the affected facilities are pools in Aundh and Pashan, which are closed for repairs, while the Yerawada pool has remained shut for months. A facility in the Rasta Peth-Somwar Peth area was also recently closed temporarily citing technical reasons.

Residents have expressed frustration over the timing of the closures, saying such facilities should remain functional during peak summer.

A civic official said some facilities require major repairs and work is underway, though completion may take time. “Contractors have been asked to expedite the process. In some cases, operations have stopped due to pending contract renewals,” the official said.

The issue has also drawn attention from elected representatives. Leader of the house Ganesh Bidkar had recently sought an audit of PMC pools following complaints of overcharging, while corporator Gaurav Ghule questioned delays in contract renewals and urged the administration to ensure facilities are operational during the holiday season.
