22-Year-Old Woman Jumps Into River From Mundhwa Bridge

Pune, 8th May 2026: A 22-year-old woman working at a call centre allegedly died by suicide after jumping into the river from a bridge in the Mundhwa area. The incident came to light on Tuesday afternoon, while her body was recovered on Wednesday after an extensive search operation.

The deceased has been identified as Nikita Ashtekar, a native of Mhada tehsil in Solapur district. An accidental death report has been registered at the Kharadi Police Station.

According to police, Nikita was employed at a call centre in the Yerawada area. Around 3 pm on Tuesday, she allegedly left her mobile phone and purse on the railing of the new bridge at Mundhwa before jumping into the river.

After receiving information about the incident, some local residents immediately entered the river in an attempt to rescue her. However, strong water currents and accumulated silt hampered the efforts. A team from the fire brigade also reached the spot and continued the search operation till late Tuesday night, but without success.

The search operation resumed on Wednesday morning, and her body was finally recovered around 1 pm.

During preliminary inquiry, Nikita’s parents informed police that she had been under mental stress for the past few months. Further investigation into the case is being carried out by Kharadi police.
