Pune: Senior Congress Leader Abhay Chhajed Injured in Car Crash at Pirangut Ghat
Pune, 12th May 2026: A car carrying senior Congress leader and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Abhay Chhajed met with an accident in the Pirangut ghat section on Monday night, leaving him injured. He has been admitted to a private hospital in Pune, where doctors are treating injuries to his head and leg.
The accident took place around 9 pm near Pirangut when Chhajed was returning to Pune from an architecture college in the area. According to preliminary information, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle in the ghat section, after which the car rammed into a hillside.
Local residents and motorists who witnessed the crash rushed to the spot and alerted emergency services. Chhajed was shifted by ambulance to Pune Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Sources said he sustained injuries below the waist, apart from head trauma. Doctors have initiated emergency treatment, hospital sources said.
A senior advocate by profession, Chhajed is considered one of the veteran Congress leaders in Maharashtra and a prominent political figure in Pune. He has served as a corporator in the Pune Municipal Corporation five times and is currently serving as the general secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.
