Pune, 16th May 2026: The state transport department has extended the deadline for the installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for vehicles registered before 2019 till June 30, giving vehicle owners another one-and-a-half months to comply with the rule.

The Maharashtra Transport Department has also clarified that strict action and penalties will be imposed from July 1 against vehicles without HSRP number plates.

Installation of HSRP has been made mandatory for all vehicles registered before 2019 following directions from the Supreme Court. However, officials said many vehicle owners across the state, including Pune city, have been slow in installing the new number plates.

State Transport Minister said the extension was granted considering the low response from vehicle owners.

In Pune alone, more than 25 lakh vehicles are required to install HSRP number plates. Despite multiple deadline extensions over the last one-and-a-half years, only 11.34 lakh vehicle owners have registered for HSRP so far.

Out of these, appointments have been issued to nearly 11.32 lakh vehicle owners, while around 9.30 lakh vehicles have already been fitted with the new plates.

Officials said nearly 63% of vehicle owners in Pune are yet to register for HSRP installation, raising concerns over whether the remaining 16 lakh vehicles will complete the process before the June 30 deadline.
