Pune: Indira University Starts Women Support Initiative ‘Indira Stree’ in Memory of Former Student Twisha Sharma
Tathawade, 19th May 2026: Indira University on Monday announced the launch of “Indira Stree,” a women’s support and well-being initiative, during a prayer meeting held in memory of former student Twisha Sharma, whose death has been attributed to alleged dowry violence.
The university organised the gathering to pay tribute to Twisha Sharma and to discuss the need for stronger support systems for women facing emotional, social, and legal challenges. Twisha’s parents joined the event virtually, while faculty members, students, and senior officials of the institution attended the programme in Pune.
The initiative was formally introduced by Dr. Tarita Shankar, President of Indira University and Chairperson of Indira Group of Institutes, who said the university wanted to ensure that women associated with the institution have access to support beyond their academic years.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Shankar said incidents linked to dowry violence continue to occur in silence and often go unaddressed. She stated that the university intends to provide support to women connected with the institution through the newly launched platform.

According to the university, “Indira Stree” will offer emotional counselling, mental health assistance, career mentorship, legal referral support, grievance redressal mechanisms, and emergency assistance. The initiative will be open to all women associated with the university at different stages of life.
Speakers at the event highlighted concerns related to dowry violence, emotional isolation, and the lack of long-term institutional support available to women after graduation. They emphasised the importance of creating accessible support systems and encouraging women to seek help without fear or stigma.
During her concluding remarks, Dr. Shankar urged women facing difficulties to speak up and seek assistance, assuring them that the institution would stand by them in times of need.
The university stated that the initiative was conceived following the passing of alumna Twisha Sharma and reflects its commitment to providing continued care, dignity, and support to women connected with the institution.
