Kalyani Nagar, 26th May 2026: Residents of Kalyani Nagar have raised concerns over private sewage tankers allegedly extracting raw sewage from drain chambers and leaving waste behind at the site. Locals claim the activity has been taking place openly for several months despite repeated objections from residents.

According to residents, the tankers arrive at different locations in the neighbourhood, remove sewage from chambers and leave behind sludge and filth, resulting in foul odours and unhygienic conditions. Several residents said they attempted to confront the drivers and operators but received no clear explanation.

“We’ve tried talking to these drivers multiple times, but most of the time they either drive away or pretend they do not know anything,” said Akil Motiwala, a resident of Kalyani Nagar.

Motiwala claimed he has personally witnessed the activity several times over the past few months.

“The sewage is supposed to be transported to PMC-approved Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). We do not know why this is happening, but I have personally seen it take place seven to eight times over the last three to four months,” he said.

Some residents alleged that similar incidents have been occurring since August 2025.

Residents pointed out that under Pune Municipal Corporation guidelines, sewage collected by private tankers must be transported to authorised sewage treatment plants for proper treatment and disposal. They alleged that leaving untreated sewage at collection points or dumping it in the open violates civic norms and environmental guidelines.

The presence of exposed sewage in a residential area has also raised health and sanitation concerns among residents, particularly for children, sanitation workers and pets frequenting the area.

Residents said the Pune Municipal Corporation has been informed about the issue, and a complaint has already been lodged. They are now awaiting action and an investigation into the operators responsible. The private company operating the sewage tankers has not yet been identified.
