Pune, 27th May 2026: The rising prices of fuel and raw materials used in paper manufacturing have begun impacting the cost of school supplies across India ahead of the new academic year starting in June. Markets in Mumbai, Pune and several other parts of Maharashtra are witnessing a sharp increase in the prices of notebooks, textbooks, school uniforms, and other educational materials, adding to the financial burden on parents.

Traders and retailers said the prices of notebooks have already increased by 40 to 60 per cent compared to last year, while some branded notebooks are being sold at nearly double the previous rates. Several shopkeepers have reportedly started selling school materials at higher prices even before the peak back-to-school shopping season begins.

Industry sources attributed the hike to a steady rise in global prices of paper pulp and other raw materials required for paper production. The increase in fuel prices has further pushed up transportation costs, which traders claim have more than doubled in recent months.

The impact is not limited to notebooks and textbooks. The prices of school uniforms have also gone up due to an increase in the cost of cotton and polyester fabrics, along with the chemicals used in textile processing.

Retailers said the combined effect of rising manufacturing and logistics expenses has significantly increased the overall cost of school essentials this year. Parents, especially those with multiple school-going children, are expected to face considerable financial strain during the admission and shopping season.

Market experts believe the prices may remain high in the coming months if fuel and raw material costs continue to rise globally.
