Pune, 27th May 2026: A dispute over tobacco inside Yerawada Central Jail led to a violent altercation between inmates, following which two prisoners were booked for allegedly assaulting a fellow inmate.

A complaint in the matter was lodged at Yerawada Police Station by senior prison officer Revanath Kanade.

According to police, the incident took place around 7 am on Wednesday near a washroom area in a barrack located in Circle No. 2 of the jail premises. An inmate was standing near a water tank before entering the toilet when two prisoners allegedly stopped him and demanded tobacco.

Police said an argument broke out over the issue, after which the duo allegedly attacked the inmate using a small serving measure used for distributing food and a plastic bucket, causing injuries to his head.

Prison guards rushed to the spot after noticing the scuffle and took the two accused inmates into custody. A formal complaint was later registered with the police.

Officials said incidents of clashes among inmates have been reported in the jail in the past as well. CCTV cameras have been installed across the prison premises to prevent violence and other unlawful activities. Police Sub-Inspector Kundan Satre is conducting further investigation.
