Pune: Chandrakant Patil Says Remarks on SPPU Research Were ‘Taken Out of Context’, Clarifies He Was Calling for Greater Innovation
Pune, 8th June 2026: Days after his remarks questioning Savitribai Phule Pune University’s (SPPU) research contributions sparked criticism, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil on Monday said his statement had been misconstrued and was intended to encourage higher standards of research rather than undermine the institution’s achievements.
In a detailed clarification on Monday, Patil said his question — “What contribution has Savitribai Phule Pune University made to society?” — raised during a function at the Deccan Education Society campus on June 6, was aimed at prompting a discussion on the future direction of research in state universities.
“Some people are attempting to create the impression that I doubt the university’s contribution. That was never my intention,” Patil said, adding that his remarks should be viewed in the spirit of expecting greater excellence from an institution with a distinguished academic legacy.
Drawing an analogy with a parent encouraging a child to achieve more, Patil said his comments reflected confidence in the university’s capabilities rather than criticism of its past performance. He described SPPU as one of India’s leading centres of learning whose researchers, faculty members and students have made significant contributions at the national and international levels.
The minister said universities must move beyond conventional academic outputs and focus on research that addresses real-world challenges and delivers tangible benefits to society. Citing a NITI Aayog report on research and development in state universities, he noted that while institutions such as the IITs have emerged as hubs of innovation, many traditional universities continue to face challenges in producing impactful research.
Patil reiterated his recent proposal to establish an independent expert group under the guidance of noted scientist Raghunath Mashelkar to strengthen and accelerate research activities in Maharashtra’s universities.
He also highlighted the state government’s efforts to support higher education institutions through faculty recruitment drives and funding initiatives such as PM-USHA and CM-USHA.
“My statement was never intended to diminish the university’s glorious legacy or contributions. It was a constructive appeal for the institution to harness its immense intellectual potential and play an even greater role in solving societal challenges through research and innovation,” Patil said.
The clarification comes after Patil’s remarks at the inauguration of a new science and mathematics research facility at SPPU drew criticism from sections of the academic community and opposition leaders, who accused him of undermining one of the state’s premier educational institutions.
