Handewadi, 9th June 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has granted permission to Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) to undertake road excavation work in Handewadi for the installation of an underground gas pipeline network. The work order was issued by the PMC Road Department on June 1, and the project is expected to be completed by June 30.

According to the official work order, the excavation will be carried out along the stretch connecting Handewadi Chowk, Siddhi City Society Chowk, Savali Building Chowk, Majestic River Society, Pholani Tower and Naval Chowk. The project aims to strengthen the city’s natural gas infrastructure and improve access to piped natural gas for residents in the area.

PMC has approved the excavation of approximately 45 metres using the open-cut method. The work will involve digging a trench about 0.80 metres wide for laying the underground gas pipeline.

To ensure public safety and minimise inconvenience to residents, the civic body has imposed several conditions. MNGL has been directed to install barricades, warning signs and reflective safety devices at the work site. The company must also coordinate with PMC officials and traffic authorities before commencing the excavation work.

The work order further states that existing underground utilities, including water pipelines, drainage lines, electricity cables and telecommunication infrastructure, must be protected during the excavation. Any damage caused to public utilities or property will be the responsibility of the company and must be repaired at its own cost.

PMC has instructed MNGL to restore the excavated road immediately after completion of the pipeline installation and ensure that the road surface is reinstated as per civic specifications. The company has also been warned that any violation of the stipulated conditions could result in cancellation of the permission and further action by municipal authorities.

Officials said the project is part of ongoing efforts to expand Pune’s gas distribution network and provide cleaner energy options to households and commercial establishments across the city.

Residents have been advised to cooperate during the construction period and follow traffic diversions and safety instructions issued near the work zone.
