Pune: RTO to Crack Down on Vehicles Without HSRP From July 1; Special Drives Planned
Pune, 10th June 2026: RTO officials will begin enforcement action against vehicles without High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) from July 1, launching special inspection drives across Pune to identify non-compliant vehicles and those displaying illegal, customised number plates.
With the June 30 deadline for installing HSRPs on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, drawing to a close, transport authorities have warned that vehicle owners who fail to comply could face penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. Vehicles found without HSRP plates or proof of a booking appointment may be fined up to Rs 1,000.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the continued use of fancy and non-standard number plates across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Vehicles displaying names instead of registration numbers, designer fonts, oversized numerals, LED-lit borders and obscured state codes remain a common sight despite regulations mandating standardised, machine-readable plates.
Residents have questioned the lack of enforcement against such violations, arguing that unreadable number plates not only violate traffic rules but also hamper investigations into road accidents, hit-and-run cases and other crimes.
The HSRP system was introduced to enable easy identification of vehicles through surveillance cameras and automated traffic management systems. Under Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, all vehicles are required to display tamper-proof, machine-readable registration plates with standardised specifications.
Deputy Regional Transport Officer Sandip Khadse said the department would intensify checks after the deadline. “Special enforcement drives will be conducted across the city, including around educational institutions and other busy locations. Action will be taken against vehicles with non-standard number plates, and penalties will be imposed as per the provisions of the law,” he said.
Khadse urged vehicle owners to complete the HSRP installation process before June 30, stating that enforcement would be stepped up once the deadline expires.
