No Rain for First 15 Days of June: Pune Sees Driest Start to Monsoon in 68 Years
Pune, 16th June 2026: Pune has witnessed an unprecedented start to June this year, with the city recording no rainfall during the first 15 days of the month at the Shivajinagar observatory — the first such occurrence in records dating back to 1958, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Weather data maintained by IMD Pune shows that this is the first time since 1958 that the city’s principal weather station has remained completely dry through the first fortnight of June. Earlier instances of prolonged dry spells at the start of the monsoon season were recorded in 1915 and 1932, when rainfall was absent for the first 17 days of the month.
Meteorologists noted that despite the delayed onset of rainfall in those years, June eventually ended with varying rainfall totals. Pune received 362 mm of rain in June 1915, while the monthly totals stood at 79 mm in 1932 and 65 mm in 1958. The first rainfall was recorded on June 16 in 1958 and on June 18 in both 1915 and 1932.
The prolonged dry spell comes as the southwest monsoon’s progress across Maharashtra remains sluggish. While isolated showers were reported in parts of Pune district, including Lohegaon and Hadapsar, most areas of the city have experienced unusually dry conditions, making this the weakest monsoon start in a decade.
According to IMD officials, monsoon currents over the region are currently too weak to generate widespread rainfall. Weather experts said atmospheric conditions are not favourable for the monsoon’s further advance over Maharashtra in the immediate future.
The absence of rain has also contributed to persistently warm conditions across Pune. Shivajinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius on Monday. Koregaon Park and Hadapsar were the warmest locations during the morning, registering 26.5 degrees Celsius each. Chinchwad recorded 25.5 degrees Celsius, while Magarpatta reported 25 degrees Celsius. Cooler conditions were observed at NDA and Lavale, where the minimum temperature stood at 22.6 degrees Celsius.
Daytime temperatures have also remained steady, hovering around 35 degrees Celsius across the city.
