Pune, 25th June 2026: The southwest monsoon has officially covered the entire state of Maharashtra as of June 24, marking a significant weather milestone, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This year’s monsoon reached all parts of the state nearly nine days later than the normal date of June 15.

Meteorological officials attributed the rapid advance of the monsoon over the past few days to favourable atmospheric conditions over the Arabian Sea and strong moisture-laden winds moving inland. These factors accelerated the system’s progress across central and eastern Maharashtra, resulting in complete statewide coverage by June 24.

While the monsoon’s arrival has brought relief from the prolonged pre-monsoon heat, rainfall distribution has remained uneven across different regions. Pune district, in particular, has witnessed significant rainfall activity in its ghat and hilly areas.

Popular destinations such as Lonavala, Tamhini Ghat, Bhor, and Mulshi have recorded moderate to heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours.

Continuous showers in these catchment areas have led to a noticeable increase in water flow in streams, waterfalls, and small rivers, signalling the early rejuvenation of the Western Ghats ecosystem.

In contrast, Pune city has experienced only light and intermittent rainfall in several areas. However, weather officials noted that rainfall intensity remains considerably higher in the surrounding ghat regions than within the urban core. Sustained rainfall in these catchment zones is expected to improve water storage levels in the major reservoirs supplying Pune in the coming days.

Authorities have issued advisories for motorists travelling through ghat sections, urging them to exercise caution due to reduced visibility, slippery roads, and the possibility of sudden heavy downpours. No major disruptions have been reported so far, but officials continue to closely monitor vulnerable stretches.

According to the IMD forecast, Maharashtra is likely to witness active monsoon conditions over the next few days, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected across the Konkan region and the Western Ghats. Interior parts of the state may also receive scattered showers as the monsoon system strengthens further.
