Pimpri-Chinchwad: Pavana Closed Pipeline Project Key to Solving Water Crisis, Says Rahul Kalate
Pimpri-Chinchwad, 29th June 2026: The completion of the long-pending Pavana closed water pipeline project is crucial for addressing the growing water needs of Pimpri-Chinchwad amid rapid urban expansion, said corporator Rahul Kalate.
The project, delayed for over 15 years due to political reasons, has now regained focus under the leadership of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. A crucial review meeting on the project will be held in Mumbai on July 3 during the ongoing legislative session, in the presence of the Chief Minister.
Kalate expressed confidence that the meeting would result in a positive decision benefiting both Maval farmers and Pimpri-Chinchwad residents by ensuring long-term water availability. He thanked the Chief Minister for prioritising the issue and said the project is essential for the city’s future water security.
After meeting the Chief Minister in Pune, Kalate highlighted that water storage tanks of 45 lakh litres in Wakad-Tathawade and 25 lakh litres in Punawale have been completed in his ward but remain non-functional due to the absence of a reliable water source.
He said he has continuously pursued the matter in the municipal corporation as well as with the state government. According to him, most land acquisition work has been completed and the municipal body has already taken steps to arrange project funding.
Kalate further stated that both the state government and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation have shown readiness to address the concerns of affected farmers, clearing the way for the project’s progress.
He reiterated that the Pavana closed pipeline project remains the only sustainable solution to the city’s long-term water requirements.
“Pimpri-Chinchwad’s water security has no alternative to the Pavana dam closed pipeline project. In my ward, large-capacity water tanks in Wakad, Tathawade, and Punawale have been built but cannot be used due to lack of water supply. This project is our top priority, and we will continue to pursue it with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. There should be no further delay, and the project must be completed to ensure permanent water security for citizens. We are confident that the Chief Minister will do justice to this project,” said Rahul Kalate.
