Pune, 1st July 2026: With monsoon showers drawing crowds to the waterfalls along the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP) has intensified enforcement against motorists stopping on the expressway’s shoulder to admire the seasonal attractions, warning that the practice poses a major safety risk.

Superintendent of Police, Highway Safety Patrol (Pune), Shivaji Pawar, said stopping vehicles on the expressway is prohibited under traffic rules and violators will face action. “Many motorists continue to halt along the expressway despite the risks involved. We have launched a special drive and strict action will be taken against those found violating the rules,” he said.

The drive is focused on stretches near Lonavala, Khandala and Kamshet, where numerous waterfalls attract large numbers of visitors during the monsoon.

According to police, vehicles parked on the shoulder of the high-speed corridor create a serious hazard, as speeding traffic leaves little room for error. Officials said there have been several instances in the past where moving vehicles crashed into stationary ones parked along the roadside, resulting in serious accidents.

The HSP has appealed to commuters not to stop on the expressway to photograph or visit waterfalls, stating that enforcement teams will issue fines under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act against those violating the prohibition.
