Pune: PCMC Declares School Holiday on July 7 as IMD Issues Red Alert for Heavy Rainfall
Reported by Mubarak Ansari
Pimpri Chinchwad, 6th July 2026: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has officially declared a holiday for all schools in its jurisdiction on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in response to a “Red Alert” warning of heavy rainfall issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The order, issued on July 6, 2026, by Sangeeta Bangar, the Administrative Officer of PCMC’s Primary Education Department, aims to ensure student safety amidst a severe weather outlook predicting extremely heavy downpours over the next 24 hours.
Scope of the Holiday
The holiday order is highly comprehensive and applies to all educational institutions within the municipal corporation limits, covering:
All Primary, Secondary, and Higher Secondary schools.
All mediums of instruction, including English medium schools.
All management types, including municipal (PCMC) schools, private aided, unaided, and self-financed institutions.
All Anganwadis (government pre-schools).
Official Directives and Background
The decision aligns with a directive issued on July 5, 2026, by the Pune District Collector and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Pune. Following the IMD Mumbai’s warning of widespread torrential rain, the local administration deemed it necessary to keep students at home to avert potential mishaps.
Mandatory Attendance for School Staff
While students are excused from attending school, the PCMC administration has made it clear that all school staff must report to work.
Presence Required: All Headmasters, teachers, and non-teaching staff are legally obligated to remain present at their respective schools during normal office hours.
Emergency Duties: Staff must be ready to immediately execute any disaster management or relief-related tasks assigned by the local administration and the District Disaster Management Cell.
The circular concludes with a stern directive warning that any violation of this order will be treated seriously, demanding “immediate and strict compliance” from all school administrators under the PCMC umbrella.
