Pune’s Arnav Paparkar Becomes First Indian in 36 Years to Reach Wimbledon Boys’ Singles Quarterfinals
Pune, 10th July 2026: Eighteen-year-old Pune tennis player Arnav Paparkar has scripted history at Wimbledon 2026 by becoming the first Indian in 36 years to reach the boys’ singles quarterfinals, marking a major milestone for Indian tennis.
Paparkar produced a commanding performance in the pre-quarterfinals on Wednesday, defeating Japan’s Ryo Tabata 6-2, 6-1 in just 52 minutes to storm into the last eight. With the victory, he became the first Indian since Leander Paes to reach the Wimbledon boys’ singles quarterfinals. Paes went on to win the junior Wimbledon title in 1990.
The achievement places Paparkar alongside Indian tennis greats Ramanathan Krishnan, Ramesh Krishnan and Leander Paes, all of whom have enjoyed memorable junior campaigns at Wimbledon. He is also the first Indian to reach the quarterfinals of any junior Grand Slam since Yuki Bhambri’s run at the US Open in 2009.
Paparkar will now face American qualifier Jordan Lee for a place in the semifinals.
Standing over six feet tall, Paparkar is currently ranked World No. 19 in the ITF junior rankings. The Pune-based player trains under coach Prosenjit Paul at the Hemant Bendre Tennis Academy and has also undergone advanced training at the Soto Tennis Academy in Spain.
The teenager has enjoyed an impressive season, reaching the third round of the French Open junior championships earlier this year while retaining the No. 1 spot in the AITA Under-18 rankings for 21 consecutive weeks.
Paparkar has also attracted attention at Wimbledon with his powerful serving. In the second round, he upset World Junior No. 3 Keaton Hance of the United States 6-2, 6-3. Against Tabata, he clocked serves of up to 208 km/h, fired eight aces, and won 23 of his 25 first-serve points in a dominant display.
The victory carried added significance, as Tabata had defeated Paparkar in both of their previous meetings. The Pune youngster turned the tables in emphatic fashion, avenging those losses on one of tennis’s biggest stages and keeping India’s hopes alive at the prestigious Grand Slam.
